Pole star latitude
Jan 22, 2016 · “If the Earth is a sphere and the pole star hangs over the northern axis, it would be impossible to see it for a single degree beyond the equator, or 90 degrees from the pole. The line-of-sight would become a tangent to the sphere, and consequently several thousand miles out of and divergent from the direction of the pole star.
Determining Latitude using Polaris (the Pole Star) Most of us are aware of the significance of the Pole Star (North Star), correctly called Polaris. It sits over the North Pole, on the axis of the earth. In the Northern hemisphere we are very lucky, as it will always shows us where true north is (providing the sky is clear!) Finding your latitude using the Pole star. Once you have determined which direction is North, you can use the Pole Star to determine how far north you are – your latitude. As shown in the inset to the image above, when you face the Pole Star (i.e. are looking north), the angle between the horizon and the Pole Star is equivalent to your latitude.
Tau Herculis was the North Pole star around the year 7400 BC and will be the closest bright star to the pole once again in the year 18,400. The star’s proper name, Rukbalgethi Shemali, means “the northern knee.” Cujam – ε Herculis (Epsilon Herculis) Epsilon Herculis is a spectroscopic double, also known as Cujam. Finding Leo and Virgo from The Big Dipper. The well-known asterism (star group) known as The Big Dipper (or The Plough) in Ursa Major (The Great Bear) can be used as a starting point to finding Leo and Virgo in the night sky (provided these constellations are above the observer's horizon at the required time). Using that and leaving the latitude adjustment alone I can be set up in minutes. Its not a perfect alignment but it will be perfectly adequate for most observing needs with an equatorial mount. I hope you have enjoyed the guide and I hope its of some use to beginners out there.
